The heroes of Aleksei Varlamov are our contemporaries: together with us, they solve the mysteries of existence and, above all, try to understand life—which tests a person not just harshly, but brutally, tears at his heart with agonizingly unresolved questions, and condemns him to loneliness.
Since the late 1980s, Aleksei Varlamov’s prose has gained wide recognition in Russia and abroad. His novella “Birth” was awarded the “Antibooker” prize.
