“Russia in Collapse”—an historical-publicist essay by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, written in May 1998. It contains the author’s reflections on the changes that happened in Russia during the 1990s, on the resulting situation and state, social, national, and moral problems, possible paths for the country’s revival, and the fate of the Russian people. In this work, Solzhenitsyn sharply and unambiguously condemned the reforms promoted by the Yeltsin—Gaidar—Chubais government (in particular, privatization) and the actions of Russian authorities in Chechnya.
“Russia in Collapse” continues a series of prior publicist works about Russia’s situation and projects for social transformation: “Letter to the Leaders of the Soviet Union” (1973), “How Can We Set Up Russia” (1990), and “The Russian Question by the End of the 20th Century” (1994).
