Description
In his most famous work “RUSSIA AND EUROPE” [1869], N. Y. Danilevsky formulated the doctrine of “cultural-historical types,” which had a significant impact on Western philosophy of culture and, in many respects, anticipated the ideas of local civilizations later developed by O. Spengler, A. Toynbee, and other thinkers.

In Danilevsky’s view, the historical process is cyclical: national cultures successively emerge, reach the peak of development, and decline, revealing their inimitable features in the artistic-aesthetic, moral, religious, economic, and socio-political spheres. In arguing against Eurocentrism and warning of the threat of cultural denationalization, Danilevsky insists that Russia’s and the Slavic world’s full self-realization is not achieved through imitation of the West, but through an independent path of development distinct from the Western one.
