The main heroine of A Novel for Women is Laura, a twenty-two-year-old girl: beautiful, intelligent, amorous, and inclined toward sensual pleasures. A chance meeting between Laura and Oliver, a forty-year-old advertising creative, witty and well-read, has a continuation: fleeting glances in a hotel restaurant turn into a serious affair. Returning to Prague, they grow closer, and for the time being Laura is happy in Oliver’s arms. One day, however, her mother Jana unexpectedly appears in the young woman’s apartment and—oh, horror!—recognizes in Oliver her former lover nicknamed Pazhout, whom she had dated even before her marriage.
