Victory in the races for the Golden Cup ended in catastrophe for the amateur jockey Ronald Britten. After a dose of sleeping medicine, he woke up tied up onboard a yacht sailing away from the English shores in an unknown direction. Kidnapping out of revenge? Quite possible—after all, Britten, working as an auditor, had sent more than one hustler to prison for financial frauds. Or maybe he got in someone’s way—the lucky rider who refused to hold the horse? However the kidnapper was, he made a mistake by assuming that loneliness, fear, and seasickness would make Britten drop out of the race forever.
