The book by Hero of the Soviet Union P.P. Vershigora—“Raid on San and Vistula”—is, in a way, a continuation of his widely known work “People with a Clear Conscience.” After the famous Carpathian raid, the legendary Kovpak’s partisan formation, now commanded by Vershigora’s former deputy of the intelligence division, makes yet another deep raid into the enemy’s rear, with a sortie into Poland. This daring thrust all the way to the Vistula is what the present book is devoted to. Readers will meet again characters they already know, and they will also learn about many new heroes of the partisan movement in Ukraine: the former border guard M.I. Naumov, the Hero of the Soviet Union German Robert Klein, the battalion commissar of the Hungarian József Tóth and others. The book is written vividly and compellingly, with the popular humor characteristic of the writer.
