“Dad, Mom went away…” said ten-year-old Dasha, holding her little sister in her arms.
“She said—just for two or three days.”
“What do you mean, went away?” Alexei didn’t believe his ears.
“Where?”
“Outside the city. She said you’d sit with us. And she left you something in the kitchen.”
Alexei rushed in the direction indicated. There was a note on the table, along with a sealed envelope. When he tore it open, he shook out the photos. Several pictures showed him in a café—with a blonde woman and a small boy.
The note attached to the photos read: “Enjoy fatherhood, Lesha. I know everything about your escapades. I’ll be back soon. You did know… that this can’t be done with me.”
Alexei covered his eyes and nearly howled. They were expecting him to be somewhere completely different—for those three days…
