I touch her cheek with the back of my palm, and my wife closes her eyes. In poor lighting I notice how her jaw trembles.
“Sweetheart, what is it? Talk to me,” I ask her in a whisper, trying not to wake up our half-year-old daughter in my arms.
I thought she would open up to me.
In a way, she does. But, alas, not what I expected to hear.
“I’m filing for divorce, Danil.”
I look at her, sure I must have misheard, and my wife turns and leaves the nursery.
“You said you’re filing for divorce? What do you mean, Yana?” I stop her.
“I’m filing for divorce and giving you full custody of our daughter,” she cuts me off, cruelly.
The door closes, and our daughter begins to cry again in my arms—returning me to a kind of world where I had lived up until then.
