Because of its socio-political orientation (the theme of the degeneration of the ruling class), “A Conversation on the Wide Road” is especially close—on the one hand—to “Notes of a Hunter,” and on the other—to “The Master of the House” and “Breakfast at the Leader’s.” Therefore, despite the attacks that “The Conversation” received in print, Turgenev included this satirical scene in all editions of his works—long before he included his other plays.
