The Russian realm has always been famous for thieves and robbers. Those who had the misfortune to meet them on empty roads could tell plenty of horrific stories. But few people managed to remain alive after such an encounter… The same bitter fate could have awaited two ladies—mother and daughter Bashmakovy—returning from a pilgrimage to a monastery with God in their hearts. While the bandits were plundering their carriage, two peasant pilgrims happened to appear on the road. They rushed to the women’s rescue at once. Together with the coachman Zakhar, they defeat the robbers. But ahead lies a long road: every three versts there are new ambushes by bandits.
