Description
Palestine, 1948. In a single moment, the familiar way of life is cut short: hundreds of thousands of people are turned into refugees. A young woman is stripped of her newborn—and from that minute on, the story of the Abulhedja family falls apart into pieces, with no hope of returning to what it was.

Left without a home, they find shelter in a refugee camp in Jenin and try to build a new reality from the ruins of what has been lost. Their journey unfolds through the fate of Amal—the girl born in exile; her brother, who paid everyone to fight for freedom; and her son, abducted as an infant and raised on the other side of the conflict—a soldier who must become an enemy of his own family.

“Susan has a warrior’s heart… She is one of the most significant writers of our time. Reading her books means beginning not only to understand how, over decades, the truth about Palestine and the Middle East has been distorted, but also to encounter an inner resistance—fear of the very truth.” – Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize laureate, author of Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart
