Nikolay Semyonovich Leskov (1831–1895) was a writer-ethnographer, a master of Russian prose, a wordsmith standing alongside L. N. Tolstoy and N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, and I. A. Goncharov. For Leskov’s works, a great variety of genres and a particular “painterliness” of language are characteristic.
