Her first publication—a story “A Day Without Lying” (1964)—made Viktoria Tokareva famous. Later, almost all of her works became bestsellers. This was most clearly reflected in the “Tokareva publishing boom” (1995–1996), when the writer entered the list of the ten most published authors in Russia. Many well-known films were made based on her scripts: “Mimino” (co-written with R. Gabriadze and G. Daneliya), “Gentlemen of Fortune,” “A Dog Walks on the Piano,” and others.

The main reason for Tokareva’s popularity is that her characters are as recognizable as the everyday life circumstances in which the action occurs, and her psychological observations are as simple, short, and clear as the plots of her novellas.
