Description
It’s the second half of the 1970s. Fifteen-year-old Lizzy Vogel works at “Paradise Corner” — a nursing home in Leicestershire. Chaos reigns here, and a young schoolgirl is clearly not meant to be here. Lizzy took this job chasing after change, desperately trying to break out of a vicious circle of monotony and boredom. Being someone’s girlfriend or getting deeply into punk culture would be exhausting, but a summer part-time job in a new place is just the thing. Lizzy knows a thing or two about old people— in her village, there are plenty of them. Maybe those lessons are enough for a fifteen-year-old student, but definitely not enough for a nursing home worker. How do you get an elderly woman out of the bathtub? What do you do if an old man is about to “pass away”? Yet when “Paradise Corner’s” competitor—a nursing home with daily tidying routines and bingo—threatens to lure all the patients away, Lizzy realizes she knows more than she thinks. Her talent for managing other people’s destinies, combined with life experience and the unpredictability of pensioners, becomes a real secret weapon in the fight against the competitors.

“Paradise Corner” continues the truly British comedy “Man at the Helm” by Nina Stibbe—mixing light, easy humor with a very complex question about connections between generations. It’s a touching story about the value of family, friendship, first love, and simple human kindness.
