Description
Russian chtonic horror—myth or a real power hiding in the backwaters? That question is inevitably raised for anyone who opens “Pyzhmu.” You are about to read a troubling psychological novel about a young man tangled in his own dreams and beliefs, about an almost deserted village and its residents who have long come to terms with their fate; at the same time, it is a heavy social drama about secrets, fear, pain—and about hope, which can still lead to healing.

Fadeev, trapped in his life, arrives in the dwindling village of Povetluzhye for his uncle’s funeral. The old house—an enduring source of family discord—can now pass to him.

But the longer Fadeev stays in this wilderness, the stronger the urge to run grows. Only the house will not let him go—just as the local old-timers will not.

In a feverish half-dream, strange visions haunt him: a burned-out meadow (belyana), an ancient lizard—Vetlugeosaurus—and men who drink bitterly and curse the master. And there is also his mother, his little sister Zhenechka, and his uncle, the giant.

Dreams skillfully pretend to be reality—and this reality, step by step, blocks every road to escape.
