In the 35 years of his life, Nikolai Gumilyov managed to do so much that it would have been enough for more than one impressive biography. He released eight poetry collections and wrote eight plays. At first glance, Gumilyov seemed to fit perfectly into the coordinate system of the Silver Age. His love of exoticism, his categorical judgments about art—and even his life itself, full of extravagant journeys—feel like one big literary manifesto. Real understanding among fellow writers came to him only rarely. Even those who sincerely loved the poet and were captivated by his work sometimes got lost in the wild, colorful brilliance of his imagination.
