One of the most significant books in the history of English literature—an allegorical journey of the soul toward truth.
“The Pilgrim’s Progress” is the most famous work by Bunyan. He began working on it during his first imprisonment and finished it during his second.
The book is an allegorical journey of Christian toward the Heavenly City. The “Progress” became enormously popular instantly—while the author was still alive it went through 11 reissues and sold over 100,000 copies. At one time it was even considered the most-read book in English after the Bible.
Bunyan’s work had a huge influence on the writing of Swift, Thackeray, and Dickens (as well as Louisa May Alcott) and became significant for many generations of Protestants.
