“Journey to the Center of the Earth” is a science-fiction novel by the French writer Jules Verne. Professor of mineralogy from Hamburg, Otto Lidenbrock, finds in an ancient manuscript he happened to buy, containing the composition of a thirteenth-century Icelandic skald Snorri Sturluson—“The Earth’s Circle”—in encrypted form. His young nephew and assistant Axel helps him read the encrypted message from the past, written by the sixteenth-century Icelandic alchemist Arne Saknussemm. The message claims that it is possible to “reach the center of the Earth” through the crater of the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull. The professor and his nephew set out on a mysterious journey.
