The heroes of Andrei Ivanov’s picaresque novel, the Indian Hanuman and the Russian-Estonian Yud, live illegally in Denmark and dream of going to Lolland—the Danish Ibiza, where freedom, girls, and grass await. Meanwhile, while they squeeze into a refugee camp, they sell, at a markup, the goods found in a dump, crack phone-code schemes, and pose as Russian mafiosi… But while they cleverly deceive others, they constantly trip up themselves, and it’s clear that the trip to Lolland will never really end.
The novel “Hanuman’s Journey to Lolland” was published by “Avenarius” (Tallinn) with the support of the Eesti Kultuurkapital Foundation in 2009. It made the shortlist for the “Russian Booker” prize.
