We present a new audiobook created by the labors of two holy Fathers: the sayings themselves belong to the Venerable Ephrem the Syrian, and their arrangement according to the model of the Psalms—for the benefit of the soul and for a life of prayer—was carried out by Saint Theophan the Hierarch.
Here is what the God-taught hierarch says about his work, offering it to us: “It is the duty of every Christian to kindle within himself the sanctifying spirit of grace. The main means for this is prayer. One in whom grace has already awakened, and who prays properly—when the power of grace is working within him; but for one who has not yet attained this, it is necessary to cultivate within himself the very prayer itself. And it is cultivated by prayers moved by the Spirit, poured out from the souls of those who burned with grace. — Therefore the Holy Church, too, entrusts prayer-books to Orthodox Christians: this may be of service through the present edition of selected prayers.
Just as among the Prophets Saint David is above all the Psalmist, so among the Holy Fathers Saint Ephrem is above all a man of prayer. His soul could not touch any Divine subject without rising upward in a prayerful outpouring of feeling. Therefore, the writings of this Saint are filled with prayer. This Holy Father may rightly be called a Christian Psalmist.”
