Description
The Origins of All Things is a historical adventure novel, expertly written with genuine knowledge and drawing on every motif from Elizabeth Gilbert’s work. The story takes place in the nineteenth century and spans more than a hundred years. At the center of the narrative is the fate of Alma Whitaker, the daughter of a botanist and one of Philadelphia’s successful businessmen.

Interwoven with years of plant research, Alma’s life events lead her to formulate an evolutionary theory that predates Darwin’s. The book is divided into three parts: Alma’s childhood, where she is raised in the spirit of the Enlightenment and the main thing in her life becomes her drive to know. Her maturity: the action moves thirty years forward—Alma is 48, and her life includes Ambrose Pike, a genius artist, a man not of this world. Finally, the third part is Alma’s stay in Tahiti, where she experiences events—together with her long-term studies of moss—that lead her to consider the evolutionary theory. The novel ends in 1883, when Alma, sensing death approaching, goes out into the garden and remembers her entire life.
