Abram Efrós was an art historian, critic, and translator whose biography unfolded during a turning point and right at the center of events. He was not only a careful witness, but also an active participant in the fast-growing cultural scene of the early 20th century. His book “Profiles” is a collection of precise, delicate portraits of friends and colleagues—where once again come to life Serov and Surikov, Benoit and Chagall, Altman and Narbut, Ostroukhov and Yuon, Kuznetsov and Rozanova, Favorsky and Sapunov, and many other masters. The fate of Efrós was extraordinary: he was closely connected with Chagall, together with Akhmatova he translated letters by Rubens, and taught the future legend—Paola Volkova. “Profiles,” one of his most significant books, is now also available in audio format.
