Louisiana, late 19th century. Edna and Léonce Pontellier arrive with their two small children at a boarding house on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Edna is beautiful and intelligent, while Léonce is a well-off, successful businessman. From the outside, their family seems flawless, but gradually a hidden crack begins to show through this prosperity. Day by day, Edna grows more and more drawn to Robert— the resort owner’s older son. Attentive, charming, and considerate, he is nothing like her restrained and dry husband, and soon Edna with frightening clarity realizes: she is in love. As if waking from the familiar routine of family life, she plunges headlong into new emotions. Torturous dreams, desperate hopes… Edna hurries to bring the longed-for happiness closer, believing it is already very near.
In addition to the novel “The Awakening,” the book includes Kate Chopin’s best short stories—vivid, gripping tales of life among passionate American Creoles.
