Description
“The Phantom of the Opera” is Gaston Leroux’s gothic novel, first published in installments in the newspaper “Le Gaulois” from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910, and later issued as a separate novel. Leroux was inspired to write the novel by the newly built opera house in Paris, which still remains one of the most famous theaters in the world.

Strange things happen in the Paris Opera House: stage sets, chandeliers, and unusual sounds fall from the ceiling; items disappear; accidents occur. Rumors circulate about a phantom living in the theater—something even some workers have seen (which, by the way, doesn’t stop them from describing him quite differently). However, the new directors are extremely skeptical. They don’t follow the advice of the previous management, and as a result—among other things—mysteriously lose a very substantial sum of money.

And meanwhile, the theater is staging the opera “Faust”…
