“The Phantom of the Opera” is a Gothic novel by Gaston Leroux, first published in installments in the newspaper “Le-Golua” from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910, and later released as a separate novel. The creation of Leroux’s novel was inspired by a newly built opera house in Paris, which still remains one of the most famous theaters in the world.

Strange things happen at the Paris Opera House: scenery falls, chandeliers drop, unusual sounds are heard, items disappear, and accidents occur. There are rumors of a phantom living in the theater — even some employees say they’ve seen him (which, by the way, doesn’t stop them from describing him very differently). However, the new directors are highly skeptical. They don’t follow the advice of the previous management, and as a result — among other things — they mysteriously lose a considerable amount of money.

And meanwhile, the opera “Faust” is being staged in the theater…
