Parables are brief allegorical instructive stories about an incomprehensible, hard-to-explain phenomenon—wisdom of many generations, an integral part of human culture. It is an art of words that reach directly into the heart.
Parables from different countries and peoples reflect different cultural and religious traditions, but they always encourage a person to think and, in them, there is goodness and love.
Zen is one of the directions of Buddhism—a special teaching without sacred texts, beyond words and letters—faith in the possibility of attaining enlightenment through a sudden, instant awakening. One of the Zen practices is experiencing paradoxes, absurd for ordinary reasoning; once they become the object of contemplation, they stimulate awakening. Therefore, many Zen stories and parables are, in a way, puzzles without a logically grounded answer. Their main task is to throw ordinary, everyday logic off balance.
