The main hero is the son of a former captain of an English frigate, who was forced to leave the service because of a severe injury. So it’s no surprise that from the very earliest childhood this child was introduced to the art of seafaring. After getting his education, in 1810, at the age of 17, he is appointed midshipman on the “Trident” under the command of an old friend of his father.
