Description
In 1904, the book «The Charming Woman. Twenty-Four Criminal Stories» was published. The «criminal stories» included in it—light, witty detective novellas—were created based on true cases of the St. Petersburg criminal investigation police from the early 20th century. They were written by a man who knew criminal Petersburg inside out—Mikhail Frolovich Chulitsky (1840–1921), head of the criminal investigation police.

«Observing the most diverse individuals among criminals, among whom one also encounters outstanding characters, I often marveled at the complexity and elusive distinctive nature of the combination of the most heterogeneous influences that shape their fateful destiny and cast them out of society.» With these words, the author’s preface to the collection of documentary detective stories begins—stories that can still surprise the sophisticated reader: reality sometimes twists plotlines that not every master of fiction can manage.
