In Chinese, the name of America — “Mei Guo” — means “the beautiful country.” But for seven-year-old Qian, who ends up in New York in 1994, this “beautiful country” turns into a real nightmare. If in China her parents were respected professors, then in the U.S. they become undocumented illegal immigrants and are forced to live in constant fear of deportation.
