The Turn of the Screw

“The Turn of the Screw” is one of Henry James’s most mysterious and finely constructed works—a classic story about the shifting line between fear that comes from outside and fear that is born within.

A young governess, who has taken charge of two perfectly well-bred children, encounters vague and unsettling signs, as if left behind by the past.

This short novel turns a Victorian manor house into a realm of mounting unease, where any sound and any glance may be a trace of genuine horror—or a reflection of the narrator’s own perception.
