The work of the distinctive Russian writer Pavel Ivanovich Melnikov-Pechersky is familiar to a wide readership through his novels “In the Forests” and “On the Hills.” Less known are his early stories and novellas, in which the author revealed himself as an expert on the life of different estates of pre-reform Russia, and the historical study “The Princess Tarakanova and the Princess Vladimirskaya,” which are included in this collection.
