Leonid Andreev (1871–1919) is a popular Russian writer of the early 20th century. In his works, he raises difficult eternal questions about the meaning of life, the relationship between good and evil, truth and delusion, the conscious and the unconscious in a person. The writer illuminates the problems of existence and morality sharply and ambiguously. The works of L. Andreev immediately became the subject of discussion—literary and public events—not only in Russian, but also in world literature.
