In the twentieth volume of the complete works of the outstanding Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904) are included stories and novellas created in 1892–1894.
A monk in dark robes, with a greyed head and black brows, his hands folded on his chest, swept swiftly past... His bare feet did not touch the ground. Flying three sazhen, he turned to Kovrin, nodded, and smiled—gently and at the same time shrewdly. But how pale—so fearfully pale and emaciated—was his face! Growing again in height, he crossed the river, silently touched the clay bank and the pines, and, having passed through them, melted away as if smoke.
