Description
The everyday life of the residents of a street in one of Florence’s working-class neighborhoods— the tiny Via del Corno— in difficult and terrifying times of rampant fascist terror in 1925–1926. In sorrow and joy, in feelings and actions of poor people struggling to earn their bread by the sweat of their brow, the living and beautiful image of the people appears— a rich and multifaceted national character that combines human dignity, courage, and kindness, faithfulness to age-old moral traditions, resilience, and optimism. Via del Corno becomes, as it were, a collective hero, though, of course, it has its shadow sides created by ignorance and poverty. On Via del Corno live a wealthy, lustful old woman, Signora, who despises working people; fascist thugs Carlino and Osvaldo; and the vile coal merchant Nezi. But the nation’s living strength is the working people, who do not accept fascism with its immoral principles of violence, deceit, demagoguery, and betrayal.
