Lost in the Jungle: The First Published Investigation into the Horrifying Disappearance of Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon in the Panamanian Jungle

In April 2014, the Panamanian police received a report about the disappearance of two girls from the Netherlands—Kris Kre(m)ers and Lisanne Frou(n), who had set out for a walk along the popular tourist route “El Pianista Trail.” Despite extensive searches, the remains of their bodies were found only several months later, and the evidence discovered sparked many theories regarding their mysterious death.

Investigators were shocked by the photographs on Lissanne’s camera, which was found together with the rest of the items in her backpack. It contained 133 photos taken between April 1 and April 8. The former head of the Dutch investigation group, Frank van de Goth, called the night photos “ominous” and compared them to a horror film. Contradictory statements from witnesses, criticism of the Panamanian authorities, and a number of inconsistencies turned this case into one of the loudest—its investigation is still being studied by investigators, journalists, and the girls’ relatives.
