“The Settlement” is one of K. Bulichev’s strongest works. It’s an exciting story of the crew of the space ship “Pole,” which crashes on a wild, unexplored planet. In an almost hopeless situation, people establish a small colony and try to survive surrounded by hostile alien animals and plants. Survival is now the main concern of the space “Robinsons.”
By the time a new generation of the inhabitants of the Settlement grows up, their rapid death seems inevitable—there is a struggle both for existence and for preserving human dignity. And the only weak chance of rescue is a terribly difficult journey over the pass to a wrecked ship—an artifact of Earth’s civilization that becomes a symbol of all human aspirations and hopes—the symbol of going home.
