Description
In a distant future, people colonized the planet Arieka, whose inhabitants possess the most unique language in the entire universe. Only a few specially modified Earthlings are able to communicate with them. After many years spent deep in outer space, Avissa Benner Cho returns to the planet. She can’t speak the language of the Ariekae, but she is an inseparable part of it—long ago turned into a figure of speech, a living comparison.

When a new ambassador arrives on Arieka as a result of complex political machinations, the fragile balance between humans and the natives is abruptly disrupted. Catastrophe is imminent, and Avissa is torn between conflicting attachments: to her husband whom she no longer loves, to the system she no longer trusts, and to her place in a language she can’t speak but which speaks through her—whether she likes it or not…
