Description
1936. Vienna. Fifteen-year-old Stefan and his friend Sophie are having fun with their friends: walking around the city, going to cafes, exploring Vienna’s underground tunnels. But everything changes abruptly when, in 1938, Hitler takes over Austria. The Nazis kill Stefan’s father, send his family to a ghetto, and Stefan himself is forced to hide to avoid being sent to labor camps. Sophie’s mother is arrested for publishing an anti-Nazi newspaper. For several years, Gertrud Wissmüller, risking her life, has been smuggling Jewish children out of Germany to countries willing to accept them. She manages to negotiate with representatives of Great Britain to admit refugee children and obtain permission from the government of the new Nazi Germany. The first train carries 600 children out of Austria, and among them are Stefan, his little brother, and Sophie, to England. But what awaits them there? How many more such trains will Gertrud Wissmüller manage to organize? And what is the fate of the last train to London?
