June 1960. Nine people find themselves forced into isolation on a small island—Utakosa—near Corfu. Whether by their own choice or by the will of fate, they are stuck there because of a storm so violent that shipping across the entire area stops until the weather improves. But even under these circumstances, Utakosa resembles an oasis of olives, cedars, cypresses, and bougainvillea. And then, right in the middle of this paradise, something terrible happens.
In a closed beach pavilion, the dead body of an English tourist, Edith Mender, is discovered. Everyone is convinced the poor woman committed suicide. Everyone—except Hopalong Basil, a popular actor of the recent past who for many years played the role of the famous English detective Sherlock Holmes. Now he must, relying on all the deductive abilities of his film hero, figure out what really happened on the island from which no one can escape and no one can reach.
