The Portrait

Gogol’s novella “The Portrait” was written in 1833–1834 and became part of the cycle “Petersburg Tales.” The work consists of two parts, each telling us about two different fates of artists. The link between the stories is the mysterious portrait of a moneylender, which had a special influence on the lives of both protagonists.
