Emmanuel Todd, a well-known French historian, sociologist, and demographer, gained fame in 1976 by accurately predicting the collapse of the Soviet Union. In his book “The Defeat of the West,” he argues that in the new conflict the West itself created the conditions for its defeat. Among the causes, he highlights the economic downturn of the United States, the loss of Protestant ethics, and the preference for peace with Russia rather than actions by Western countries.
Born in 1951, Emmanuel Todd studied political science in Paris and earned a doctorate at Cambridge. He worked at the National Institute of Demographic Studies. His interests focus on modern demographic issues, economic stagnation in developed countries, and the crisis of their political systems.
“The Defeat of the West” is devoted to military actions in Ukraine. Todd presents his viewpoint, different from the Western mainstream opinion. He believes that Ukraine’s defeat is inevitable and will become the defeat of the West, which is to blame for it itself due to growing debts, economic decline, complacency, and inability to take into account the diversity of the world.
