Anton Lushin, an ordinary laborer and searcher, goes on another expedition to find the bodies of fallen Red Army soldiers. At the site of a mass death caused by an enemy aerial bombardment, Anton sees a transparent veil through which he slips into the past—right in the middle of the fighting for Rzhev in the spring of 1942. Posing as a namesake—political officer who died in the attack of the “Messerschmitt”—Lushin heads to the front line. And there, the heaviest battles for the Rzhev salient are underway, with the Red Army suffering enormous losses. Will a political officer from the future be able to change the course of battle at least within his company’s sector? Or is it enough to alter history by simply saving the lives of the soldiers who trusted him?
