Doyvber Levin was from Belarus, from the shtetl of Lyaды.
At seventeen, he went to Petrograd to study to become a theater director. But it turned out he didn’t become a director—he became a writer, and above all, a writer for children. His first story was almost fantastic—“The Flight of Herr Dumbkopf,” or “The Flight of Mr. Fool,” if you translate the title from German to Russian. It was printed in the magazine “Pioner.” Today, an issue of that magazine can hardly be found even in libraries, though it would be wonderful if modern children could discover this fun and witty story by the wonderful writer Doyvber Levin—if not in print, then at least in audiobook form.
