Description
Since the schism on the Salt Road, the Old Believer “kerzhak” descendants have been living their lives. They obeyed only their own laws; in census lists they also did not appear, and they had no passports. They did not welcome outsiders and, in particular, kept their distance from scholars—who, in turn, sent expedition after expedition to the Kerzhak forest settlement.

Only one researcher was lucky: historian Yuri Kosmach learned about the lives of descendants of boyar families who had survived the schism, about the library, and about the elders of the Sonorets. But the dissertation in which he set out the collected material—and his theory of how power changed—“disappeared” in the archives. Kosmach, who was unwelcome to both left and right, to atheists and believers, to innovators and conservatives, resigned himself. People forgot about him.

But in the 1990s a secret monarchist party—one that created a new concept of the Third Rome, which the Third Dynasty was supposed to revive—urgently needed the author of that anonymous dissertation numbered 2219 and his fiancée, the Old Believer Vavil Uglitskaya…
