A perceptive novel about what it’s like to exist amid the turbulent currents of information in the premonition of a global catastrophe. Lizzie, who has worked for many years in a library, now takes on answering letters sent to the podcast mailbox—messages claiming that the entire world is going to fall apart. Only the anxious and neurotic write here, so she ends up in an ocean of fears and speculations about climate change and the end of civilization. Meanwhile, a doctor prescribes Lizzie a plate/piece for her teeth grinding. Her husband reads a story about an ancient war under the blanket. A sleeping dog twitches its paws as if it’s running somewhere. Her son asks: “Are you definitely my mom? Sometimes you’re very mean.” Life seems like nothing but madness—yet the miracle is that in this absurd world everything is connected. Deceptively easy, written in short, sketched paragraphs as if on the run, the book is packed with sharp observations, astonishing facts, and truly complex feelings.
