The Poetry of Gardens

In his work, Academician Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachov considers garden-and-park art as an expression of the artistic thinking of an era and shows how the worldview and philosophical ideas of the time find embodiment in landscape solutions. This book is not a chronicle of the development of gardens, nor an analysis of individual masterpieces; it is an attempt to understand garden styles as manifestations of cultural consciousness of specific countries and historical periods. The author traces how the “style of an era” is reflected both in the arrangement of gardens and in poetic creativity. The study focuses on the relationship between poetry and garden art: what stylistic patterns they follow, what ideas they convey, and what place the theme of gardens and parks occupies in the world of the poet.
