A rare gift suddenly opens up for a former teacher: he can write letters that act on the recipient as inevitably as forces of nature. With letters, the hero can persuade, intrigue, comfort, seduce— in a word, magically transform someone else’s will. Friends advise him to turn this gift into a commercial service. The hero places an advertisement in the newspaper, and one day a phone call comes in that changes his life beyond recognition.
The novel describes the work of a unique event agency, where unforgettable events are devised and arranged for wealthy clients: dates, reconciliations, romantic partings. The hero is offered fairy-tale terms of cooperation, but first he must complete a test assignment—write a letter to a stranger on someone else’s behalf. The game of correspondence turns out to be so successful that it becomes, as well, fateful.
