Virginia Woolf (1882–1941), the great prose writer of the last century, wrote the novel “To the Lighthouse” (M., Text 2002 edition) when she was 30 years old. In Russian, it was published for the first time only two years ago. The interest in the novel was so great that we are happy to offer readers its new edition. The novel’s heroes are English people who head to South America, some for business, some for pleasure. The main heroine’s prototype can confidently be considered V. Woolf herself. At the center of the novel is the young creature’s first meeting with society and the conflict that arises as a result. “To the Lighthouse” is the first novel by V. Woolf in which she is still more traditional—this is not yet the stream of consciousness; it is easier to read than her later novels.
