The book by the famous writer and naturalist Joy Adamson tells the story of the cheetah Pippa and her cubs. Contact with Pippa provided unique opportunities for researchers to study the life of cheetahs in the wild, in natural conditions in Kenya’s Meru National Park.
From the author:
Given that contact with Pippa provided unique opportunities to study cheetahs in the wild, the management of Kenya’s Meru National Park allowed me to continue observations of the cheetahs I had already written about in the book “The Spotted Sphinx,” and of Pippa’s new children (the fourth litter). Thus I was able to compare their development with the development of the previous litter and determine how typical—or not—my earlier observations are for cheetah behavior. In addition, I hoped to learn how Pippa would behave when meeting her previous family—alone or with the cubs—in the period when she had not yet separated from her current children. And finally, I may have been given the chance to learn how she distributes hunting territories among her growing family and how they all choose a mate. That is how the book “Pippa Challenges” came into being.
