The plot is based on an ancient Greek myth about a sculptor who tries to bring his own statue to life. In the play, the hero, working on an ordinary flower seller, seeks to turn her into a refined aristocrat. Sir Shaw called “Pygmalion” a mockery of fans of “blue blood” and believed his plays were stones thrown at the windows of Victorian respectability. In 1977, a film-ballet was released based on this play, and today “Pygmalion” is successfully staged in theatres around the world.
